Fear

my heart was pounding.
my palms- sweaty.
i was beginning to feel a little nauseated.
i could hear a slight pounding in my ears.
watching my baby boy
walk up the stage stairs
scared
nervous.
you see he wanted to try out
for the
Velveteen Rabbit.
he actually changed his mind
a couple of times because he was so nervous.
that nervousness i truly understand.
i didn't try out for the
Sugar Plam Fairy
when i was in
The Nutcracker
because i was too scared.
i never tried out for the high school
basketball team because i was too scared.
i was too fearful of writing a thesis
to go for my masters.
i know that feeling like my son.
but i want my son to know the feeling of
courage.
triumph.
pride.
and so i encouraged him
and we said a little prayer
and he walked up the stairs to
the stage.
the stage that was ENORMOUS
that was inside an auditorium
that was GINORMOUS
and he sang a song.
granted you could barely hear him
but i didn't matter
(i mean he's guaranteed a part)
because he was
brave.
and proud.
and happy.
I'm so proud of you Tuck!

oh, how i know those feelings! i remember the shaking fear when i did tryout for something -- and the regret when i was too afraid, then wished i'd gone for it.

every time one of my kids tries out for anything, i feel anxious. but i'm so happy that they're learning to take chances for what means a lot to them.

so i say, HOORAY FOR YOU, TUCKER! you've won a victory for all of us who, at one time or another, were afraid to try. i am proud of you.

Good for you Tucker. I wish I could see that play, I'll bet it will be adorable. I think you should have tried out too...I mean were there any rules that said you couldn't. what if you just said you wanted to try out to overcome a fear, that you didn't actually want to be in the play. I'm sure they would have let you sing a song. you should ask next time. I'm still salavating over that bread, it looks crusty and delicious. look at you making bread and taking your kids to tryout for community theatre. you are such an amazing mother. you inspire me.

You rock Tucker! And that happens to be one of Heidi's favorite books! We own to versions. Too bad Arkansas ain't closer to Texas or else we'd have to check the play out.
